Mölkky is a popular throwing game, developed in Finland. Traditionally played at summer cottages, it is also popular in parks and yards.
Based on the traditional Karelian game "kyykkä," Mölkky is easier and suitable for all age groups. The game was modernized by the Päijät-Häme education consortium and later, in 2016, its rights were sold to the board game company Tactic Games Oy. Players throw a wooden Mölkky block aiming to knock down numbered pins to score exactly 50 points, blending skill and luck. This activity is fun for all participants.
Mölkky Rules
The setup is placed 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) from the throwing area, with pins arranged in a specified numeric order (see below). Players throw the Mölkky to knock down pins numbered 1-12 in any style. Points are scored based on the pin number knocked down. If multiple pins are knocked, points equal the number of pins knocked. Pins leaning on another pin or the Mölkky are not counted. Pins are are reset (put standing again) at the spot they fell after each throw. If a pin hits a fixed object, it is moved the length of the Mölkky away from the obstacle. A player loses and exists the game after three consecutive scoreless throws. If the score exceeds 50, the score drops to 25.
The first player to exactly score 50 points wins and the game ends.
Mölkky Setup
The order of pins starts with 1 and 2, then numbers 3 through 8 are alternated left and right. The largest pins are placed in the center: 10 in front, then 11 and 12 behind, and finally 9 at the back. The official distance from the throwing area is 3.5 meters (11.5 feet); a rough step measure of 3-4 (10-12 feet) meters suffices in casual games.
Mölkky Competitions
Mölkky is popular in Finland and France. Since 1997 there has been the Finnish Mölkky Championships. From 2004 the World Championships have been held in Lahti, Finland. Since 2016, the World Championships have been hosted outside Finland, starting in Le Rheu, France.
Check out the video down below for a quick intro for the mölkky game (even though the prononcuation of mölkky [meul-kuu] is horrible!):
